History of Petworth
Petworth is known for its Distinctive Wardman style row houses, (named after Harry Wardman the City developer who helped plan many of the row homes throughout the District) pastoral parks, historic institutions & local businesses fronting the longest commercial corridor in the District, Petworth over the years has been emerging as a vital urban neighborhood that delivers all of the advantages of city living with a dash of suburbia.
Strategically situated along the Georgia Avenue corridor the area is easily accessible by DC residents as well as Maryland commuters. With so many through streets that lead to the major roads, Petworth residents have quick access to hospitals, restaurants, shops & markets. In just minutes, residents can quickly go from their front door to the Key Bridge or the National Mall.

For the outdoor enthusiasts looking for a place to run, picnic, or escape the noise of K Street, Petworth is just a few blocks away from Rock Creek Park. In addition to Rock Creek Park, the neighborhood is home to community parks such as the Petworth Spray Park, Upshur Recreation Center, and Upshur Park. The Park at 8th & Taylor ST is home to The Petworth Jazz Project where residents go to listen and support local jazz musicians. In addition to some of its modern-day features, Petworth is home to a significant historical site, President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers Home. This landmark is a Gothic Revival Cottage where the 16th President once vacationed and where President Lincoln developed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Since 2009 there has been a handful of major residential and commercial developments established near the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro station.
